Quatuor Belcea
The Belcea Quartet performs one of the masterpieces of Schubert's chamber repertoire.
Schubert Quartet No. 12 op. posth. D. 703 « Quartettsatz » Shostakovitch Quartet No. 12 14 op. 142
Schubert Quartet No. 12 14 op. posth. D. 810 « Death and the Maiden »
The Maiden: “Ah, Away! Thou cruel man of bone! And do not touch me!".
Death: "Give me thy hand, you fair and tender creature. Be of good courage; I am not cruel. You shall sleep gently in my arms." The music for the Lied, which Schubert drew from the verses of Matthias Claudius in 1817, serves as a theme to be varied from the Andante con moto of the D minor Quartet composed in 1824 in order to 'find a way to the symphony'. The composer himself was fighting against the Grim Reaper – that is, the syphilis that was eating away at him. With their high-precision mechanics, their love of detail and the roaring density they know how to bring to the drama, the Belcea Quartet should take your breath away. They allow themselves an infidelity to the Viennese in the middle of the concert programme, for another 14th by Shostakovich (1973).
