    Britten French Folk Songs

An exceptional voice... but also a thought: the author of a well-received essay on the Winter Journey, the British tenor Ian Bostridge adds to his vocal prowess the depth of a sharp reflection on the text. He is back here with a delicately melancholy concert programme that draws on the roots of popular legends, with excerpts from Mahler's Knaben Wunderhorn, the French inspirations of the Englishman Britten, and Fauré's – somewhat English – Mélisande. Strauss's Metamorphoses, an instrumental fireworks display, will complete this impressionistic picture. A work composed at the end of the Second World War by an octogenarian Strauss, overwhelmed by the bombing of the Munich opera house, in which all the flashes of a still incandescent grief are unleashed. An evening conceived as a journey... or as a dream.
