Condemned to wander forever for daring to defy the gods, a sailor can only be saved by a woman’s love and fidelity. This is the plot of Wagner’s first masterpiece at just thirty years of age. Composing both the libretto and score, the musician laid the foundations with The Flying Dutchman for his future “musical drama”. Here, we have a combination of an implacable sense of monologue, duets and choruses overflowing with lyricism and, even at this stage, an orchestra which does not simply accompany the voices but is a fully-fledged participant in the drama. What makes this Dutchman interesting is François-Xavier Roth’s decision to perform Wagner on period instruments. The “historic credo” of the composer and his musicians will bring a new and thrilling approach to the music of the Master of Bayreuth
