Although the Stabat Mater is authentic Pergolese, unlike the multitude of apocryphal works attributed to him after his death, we know very little about its genesis. This poignant work by a musician who died tragically young at twenty-six years of age gave rise to a legend similar to that associated with Mozart’s Requiem. Tradition has it that the composer completed it on his deathbed. The reality appears to be more prosaic according to a number of modern musicologists and historians. Nevertheless, the fame of this work, which was frequently played and published from the eighteenth century onwards, made a significant contribution to the composer’s posthumous reputation. With its extraordinarily expressive arias and duets for soli, this work is one of a small number of masterpieces of the early music repertoire
