David Fray has accustomed us to happy pairings. In 2006, his first recording featured pieces by Liszt and Schubert, followed two years later by a second more unexpected opus combining Bach and Boulez. It is in this spirit that he has devised the programme for tonight, returning in a sense to his first loves. The musicologist Jacques Drillon stated “that Lizst is a successor to Schubert, to whom he owes a great debt for his harmonic language, and he found in the Wanderer-Fantasie the formal idea for a sonata”. Tonight, David Fray embraces this genealogy and reveals the affinities between these two huge musicians. This is a concert in the form of a tribute, but the creativity of the performer will turn it into a festive occasion.
