Sidelined? Spurned? Scorned? Neglected… and possibly eventually consigned to oblivion because they are women? This is a valid hypothesis when we consider how French women composers struggled in the 19th century to earn the esteem of their contemporaries and have their works performed. The Fondation Bru Zane is reviving music by women from this century whose names are frequently unfamiliar to music lovers. Following in the wake of Louise Farrenc, we have six women composers, often the students of the great masters, who were also pianists, singers and poets, and it is high time they were rediscovered. A concert full of contrasts in the safe hands of keen expert Hervé Niquet.
