Quatuor Hanson
The young French quartet deliver a kaleidoscopic programme of Stravinsky, Mozart and Bartók.
Stravinsky 3 pieces for string quartet
Mozart String Quartet No. 19 K. 465 « Les Dissonances »
Bartók String Quartet No. 4 Sz 91
In 2019, their sophisticated first album devoted to Haydn (Aparté) put them in the full glare of the spotlight. After Three Pieces in which Stravinsky flirts with atonality, the Hansons return to classical music with Mozart. Divine, Wolfgang? Not entirely. The bold harmonics of Quartet No. 19 startled his contemporaries and earned it the unambiguous nickname of “The Dissonance Quartet” in the 19th century. The precision and sense of balance of these young French performers will be brought to bear on the arcane elements of Bartók’s String Quartet No. 4 from 1928, when the composer was seeking a palindromic structure: “the slow movement is the kernel of the work; the other movements are, as it were, arranged in layers around it”. Fascinating symmetries.
