Carmen is among the most frequently performed operas worldwide, despite a mixed reception when it was premiered at the Opéra-Comique in 1875. Today, it is a cult classic with its famous arias and melodies familiar to all, and its wonderfully expressive and colourful orchestra in crowd scenes and intimate moments alike. The role of Carmen has an ambiguous register as the performer must meet the exacting demands of both the mezzo soprano and dramatic soprano registers. With her naturally rich vocal harmonics, outstanding musician Marina Viotti embraces the role with voluptuous verve in counterpoint to the full-blooded lyricism of Stanislas de Barbeyrac’s Don José.
