Die Entführung aus dem Serail, which for many years was considered to be a minor score, is now acknowledged to be a major work in Mozart’s operatic catalogue. The disparities in style for which it was criticised in the past are now hailed as a clear indicator of a pleasing diversity in which the noble tone and virtuosity of Konstanze sit harmoniously alongside the sparkling energy of Blonde and the irresistible comedy of Osmin. Die Entführung aus dem Serail is unusual in Mozart’s work as it bridges two periods in his opera-writing career: the spontaneity of youth which is drawing to a close and the mastery of his fully mature writing. Pervaded with faux exoticism, yet subtle and irresistibly tender, this cocktail was a source of inspiration for Rossini some years later. Julien Chauvin and his young team will capture every ounce of its zest.
