Conductor and harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock, an icon of the baroque repertoire known notably for his work with The English Concert which he conducted for 30 years, still enjoys forays into classical repertoire. He recently posted on Twitter that “Schubert’s music is revolutionary!” and he will demonstrate this tonight with the composer’s last symphony, this final work reflecting the composer at the peak of his art. Its “heavenly long passages” were praised by Schumann. Prior to this, he will conduct Gil Shaham in Beethoven’s only concerto for violin, a contemporary of his Symphony No.4 and Piano Concerto No. 4. The violinist fell in love with this piece as a young man when he heard performed by David Oïstrakh. That magic has never faded and he frequently includes it in his programmes.
