After the Chorégies d’Orange festival in the summer of 2022, the combined forces of La Scala Milan and their music director Riccardo Chailly are visiting Paris with a programme devoted entirely to Verdi, repertoire in which they are unrivalled. In the twenty-six operas which he composed, Verdi never failed to surprise and charm with his lively orchestrations, the tragic twists and turns of his plots, and the virtuosity of his arias. His music can always pluck at our heartstrings and make us laugh and cry by turn. In many instances, the parts for chorus can claim much of the credit for the popularity of a work. Examples include the famous Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves “Va’, pensiero” in Nabucco, which is virtually the alternative Italian national anthem, and the Anvil Chorus “Vedi, le fosche notturne spoglie” in Il Trovatore. This evening, we will share these rousing emotions with wonderful musicians under the intense and highly expressive baton of Riccardo Chailly.
