Haydn, Tchaikovsky and Dvořák were all skilled at blending a variety of influences with their own styles. With his Variations on a Rococo Theme, Tchaikovsky demonstrated his fondness for eighteenth-century music while demanding typically Romantic virtuosity from the cellist. Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7, which was premiered in London, is sometimes referred to as the “The Great” to reflect the composer’s mastery. Although it is punctuated with a few popular touches, what shines through most clearly is the Czech composer’s admiration for Brahms.
