With Johann-Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel, the baroque orchestra reveals its rich colour palette. Brandenburg concerto No. 1 dating from 1721, whose name is derived from its dedication to the Margrave of Brandenburg, showcases horns, whereas Ouverture No. 4, boasting three trumpets, three oboes and two timpani is inspired by the pomp of Versailles. Handel also turned to France and its dances in 1717 when he composed his Music for the Royal Fireworks at the request of King George II : on April 27, 1749, a grandiose spectacle was offered to Londoners to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. However, in the first three movements of Brandenburg Concerto No. 1, we can also detect the Italian model which was adopted by Carl Philipp Emanuel, Johann Sebastian’s second son. This is evident in his Symphony No. 4 in 1776, which was already moving towards the classical style of the end of the century.
