    Mirroring Enlightenment philosophy, late eighteenth-century music favoured the clarity and optimistic vigour which characterises Symphony No. 16, for example. Seen from this perspective, the two concertos conducted from the keyboard by Javier Perianes take on a particular significance. Concerto for Piano No. 24 by Mozart is coloured throughout by a sense of tragedy. The orchestration (which unusually for this era is heavy on trumpets and timpani), the C minor key, and the formal construction emphasise its uniqueness. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, which is also in C minor, bears the hallmarks of the crisis which the composer was experiencing as his hearing deteriorated irrevocably. But a few rays of light shine through the clouds in the dreamy tone of the Largo and the joyful finale.
