Our regular concertgoers will be familiar with Adam Laloum’s affinity with Schubert. For the uninitiated, his performance of the last three sonatas in 2020 bowled over audiences and critics alike. André Tubeuf remarked at the time: “sang-froid (with flashes of daring), poetry (with its abysses), sonority embracing the subtlest emotional nuance with restraint and authenticity throughout all contribute to the [D. 959’s] memorable impact.” Before reprising this work, the pianist will explore two fantasies by Chopin: the serious opus 49 (1841) and opus 61 (1846). According to Liszt, the latter piece was shaped by “elegiac sadness […] punctuated by alarming movements, melancholic smiles, unexpected jolts, and restful passages full of starts.” This sums it up in a nutshell.
