In 2018, the trio’s second encounter with Haydn, on the Harmonia Mundi label, received a “Choc de Classica” recommendation from Classica magazine and a Gramophone Award. Diapason commended their “exquisite taste for narrative direction”. Now, the Trio Wanderer revisit the composer of The Creation, taking on his Trio No. 43, which they first recorded on the Harmonia Mundi label twenty-two years ago. After a detour via Liszt, we reconnect with a youthful Chopin, whose opus 8 from 1829 sweeps us along with its dark, moody strings. At one stage, the Polish composer even considered replacing the traditional violin with a viola, which would have changed everything – and would have deprived us of Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian’s talents! Ultimately, Chopin decided against the change, and focused on the violin’s lower register.
