    Brahms was only thirty years old when he began composing his German Requiem. This masterly and deeply original work marks a completely new departure in German music. It is sacred funeral music, but it is not a mass for the dead, hence the significance of the indefinite article “Ein”. Brahms stated “as far as the title is concerned, I would be happy to remove the word ‘German’ and to replace it quite simply with ‘for humanity’”. This is an awe-inspiring sacred work that is undeniably universal in spirit.
