Dernières notes – La dernière soirée de Romain Rolland, a play by Michel Mollard

Eighty-years have passed since the death of Romain Rolland, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915. He was the global conscience of a generation, a disciple of “world literature” following in the footsteps of Goethe, and the author of the monumental work Beethoven which is still a key reference text for anyone with an interest in the composer. Close to death, in the seclusion of Vézelay, the writer expressed a last wish: to hear Opus 111, the final sonata by the Master of Bonn with whom he had come to identify. This is the theme of the play Dernières notes by Michel Mollard, which is coming to the stage of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées hot on the heels of its acclaimed premiere last year. It features pianist and actor Pascal Amoyel in the role of Romain Rolland. In the first half, the Tchalik Quartet takes us to dizzying Beethovenian heights with String Quartet No. 13 and the Grosse Fuge with its granite-like quality.
