If musical secrets are handed down from mother to son, then Gaspard Dehaene, who only began to play seriously in his late teens when he became fascinated by Chopin’s Ballade No. 4, has certainly learnt a few from Anne Queffélec. Nevertheless, she stresses that “we are very different, in every way, from the style of our playing to our choice of repertoire”. As soloists, they take turns on the stage. In addition to Mozart, whom Queffélec has deemed “the love of her life”, and Scriabin, whose formidable Fantaisie in B minor was recorded by the virtuoso Dehaene shortly after he added it to his repertoire, the programme also includes Schubert. We begin with some famous Lieder transcribed by Liszt then, of course, two pieces for four hands which flow effortlessly from this duo’s fingertips.
