Ravel Gaspard de la nuit
Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition
Benjamin Grosvenor celebrates Ravel by reprising Gaspard de la Nuit, the formidable triptych which first showcased him as a recording artist. Before assessing how much his interpretation has matured, we recall the article in Diapason which even then praised his “colour, sonority, variety, vivacity [...], and innate sense of drama which is always energetic, lively and vibrant.” The virtuoso will then stroll through the Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky, who was inspired by the works of the late great Viktor Alexandrovich Hartmann (1834-1873), a painter and interior designer who was closely associated with The Five. We find some of those same colours in the composer’s famous orchestration for the Bolero.
