In the thirty or so years in which they have been making music together, and in Sunday Morning Concerts since 2012, (Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian “only” joined Raphaël Pidoux and Vincent Coq in 1995), the Wanderer Trio have been continuously expanding their repertoire. “Chamber music is like wine: you need good raw ingredients, and a degree of know-how, but nothing beats long maturation in optimum conditions,” claim the musicians. After Beethoven’s Archduke Trio, the pace changes with a trio composed by Smetana when he was laid low by grief after the death of his daughter Bedřiška. It is, of course, deeply affecting.
