Schubert String quartet D. 810 « Der Tod und das Mädchen » (version for solo strings, arrangement by Gustav Mahler)

One of the most famous Romantic concertos, a still little-known composer, a dazzling masterpiece by Schubert: for her debut as a concertmaster with the orchestra, the violinist Antje Weithaas has found a programme that matches her knowledge of the score, her musical intelligence and her impressive technical prowess. As precocious as he was inspired, Felix Mendelssohn left behind no less than 300 works, including this scintillating Violin Concerto No. 2, which became a classic from the moment of its premiere. While Felix quickly established himself as a celebrated figure in the musical world, his sister's fame was less obvious: "Fanny, as I know her, never wished to become a composer nor to have a vocation for it; she is too much of a woman," wrote Felix to their mother... an opinion belied by the few opuses that Fanny dared to publish a year before her death.
