    Tchaikovsky  The Seasons Op.37b
    Schubert  Sonata D major. 850

For his new Paris recital, Christian Zacharias, a brilliant performer of Scarlatti, Mozart, Haydn and Schubert, engages Tchaikovsky and Schubert in dialogue. He will perform the complete cycle of Tchaikovsky’s Seasons. Although his symphonies, ballets and operas are regularly featured on programmes at concert halls worldwide, Tchaikovsky’s piano music is relatively rarely performed. This Seasons cycle, twelve genre scenes each conjuring up a month of the year, remains his most famous work for keyboard. In counterpoint, the German pianist will return to his first love with Sonata No. 17 by Schubert, repertoire which he has played frequently and recorded. Sonata No. 17 is one of the most extensive and powerful works that the musician composed for the piano. It was never finished and exudes a mood of almost metaphysical serenity and triumphant joy – two qualities which may seem contradictory, but are perfectly at home together here.
